The Division of Emergency General Surgery at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine is recruiting for an acute care surgeon and surgical intensivist, hired at the Health Sciences Clinical Professor Series at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor Level, dependent upon the candidate’s qualifications.
This position would be primarily located at the brand-new Irvine campus hospital, a 144-bed hospital opening in December 2025, which will feature a surgical intensive care unit as well as a busy emergency general surgery service. Additionally, the faculty would develop a robust elective general surgery practice in Irvine.
The Surgical Intensive Care Unit would include patients from most of the surgical specialties including the emergency general surgery service.
The new Irvine hospital will feature an Emergency Department, urgent care, and have most of the specialty services with state-of-the-art operating rooms.
While the Irvine hospital is not a trauma center, there may be opportunities for additional trauma call at the Orange Campus, the only ACS-verified Adult Level 1 Trauma Center and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center in Orange County, serving a population of 3.2 million with over 6,100 trauma activations annually. The Orange Campus also includes the county’s only ABA-verified Burn Center. Participation in trauma call is optional and may be available depending on departmental needs and scheduling.
Candidates should have an MD/DO or equivalent and have completed a fellowship in surgical critical care with board certification / eligibility in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. A California medical license and current DEA are required at the time of hire.
Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with training, qualifications, and experience. Strong interest and demonstrated abilities in delivering patient care in an academic clinical setting, teaching residents, fellows, and medical students, clinical research, and providing service to the University are required.
