GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The background investigation process may take up to 6 weeks depending upon the complexity of the applicant's background and position for which they've applied.
Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is seeking to fill the vacancy of School Crossing Guard.
Under the general direction of the School Crossing Regional Supervisor, performs work of routine difficulty in assisting school children and other pedestrian traffic across streets at designated intersections. Members are expected to maintain an alert attitude to prevent/avoid hazardous traffic situations. Work is reviewed through observation and results obtained.

Qualifications
- As outlined under Section 7D.03 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- Good physical condition, including sight, hearing, and ability to move and maneuver quickly in order to avoid danger from errant vehicle
- Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of thepaddle’s STOP message during the entire crossing movement
- Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously
- Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in sufficient time to avoid injury
- An overall sense of responsibility for the safety of students
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of basic traffic laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to school zones
- Good physical condition and dependability
- Interest in children’s safety
- Ability to develop a positive relationship with children
- Ability to command the respect of children
- Ability to exercise mature judgment in emergencies
- Ability to perform all functions of the job classification without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace
