Job Title: Substitute Food Service Associate
For many students, a school meal is part of what allows the day to work. Nine Mile Falls School District is seeking Substitute Food Service Associates who understand the responsibility that comes with preparing and serving food in a school setting.
Substitute Food Service Associates step in to support meal service when additional help is needed. This work involves following established procedures, maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen, and working alongside staff to ensure meals are served as expected. The pace can be steady and the environment busy, but the role is important. Food service staff are part of the daily rhythm of the school, and substitutes are trusted to contribute in a way that supports students and respects the standards in place.
Salary: Current Washington State Minimum Wage ($17.13 per hour)

Limited Defined Employees will accrue 1 hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked. Employees who work 630 hours in a school year will become benefit eligible for the remainder of the school year. Standard benefits include, Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance and Long-Term Disability. Benefits are provided through the School Employee Benefits Board (SEBB) at https://www.hca.wa.gov/employee-retiree-benefits/school-employeesPositions anticipated to work 70 hours or more per month for at least 5 months over a 12-month period are eligible for Retirement through the State Department of Retirement Services.

Nature and Scope of Job:
May be responsible for serving breakfast and lunch, supervising student servers, cashier, washing dishes, cleaning the kitchen, production record keeping, and safe food handling practices.
Position Reports To: Food Service Director / Superintendent
Classification: Substitute Food Service Associate
Work Day: Monday – Friday; Hours Vary
Begin: 2025/26 School Year
Primary Job Functions
Preparing and or serving meals
Sanitation/food safety/record keeping in compliance with state and federal guidelines
Cashier during meals, depositing money into meal accounts, proper cash handling, and daily paperwork.
Assist in stocking and cleaning of kitchen.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Required Qualifications (Traits, Education, Experience, Training, physical requirements, etc.):
Read and write in English and calculate simple math.
Current Washington State Food Handler Permit.
Physically able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Able to stand for long periods of time.
Able to supervise student workers in a positive manner.
Able to work as a team member.
Desired Qualification
High School Diploma, High School Transcript or equivalent.
Experience in an institutional kitchen.
Able to problem solve and make effective decisions using positive communication skills.
Understanding of USDA requirements for the National School Lunch and Breakfast program.
Equipment Used
Computer, Slicer, Mixer, Food Processor, Ovens, Steamer, Warmer, Dishwasher, Braising Pan, Steam Table.
Environmental Demands:
Heat and High Humidity, Steam and Hot Water, Hard Floor, Prolonged Standing, Cleaning Supplies, Odors, and Noise.
