Description
Unit Leader is not a standalone position. This is an extra responsibility that must be done in conjunction with another position such as science instructor or aquatics instructor.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Take all necessary steps to insure the health, safety and welfare of all persons involved in the program.
- Make campers and staff aware of health and safety regulations and enforce camper and staff regulations and policies.
- Uphold and enforce Seacamp operating and conservation policies.
- Active participation in pre-camp and post camp activities.
- Participation in general planning of program activities.
- Make sure that staff is available to act as table heads during meals.
- Supervise and help campers during clean-up activities.
- Help the maintenance, office and kitchen staff if needed.
- Provide supervision and care of equipment.
- Maintain proficiency in boat and engine operation and be familiar with and heed boating rules of the road, USCG regulations, and Seacamp policies/procedures.
- Become thoroughly familiar with local marine study/dive areas.
- Attend all scheduled meetings
- Supervise and guide the unit counselors.
- Supervise day and evening activities not related to the curriculum.
- Supervise maintenance and cleaning performed by counselors and instructors.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Supervise the unit counselors and unit activities.
- Orient counselors to specific unit duties.
- Wake up the units every morning.
- Supervise the units during rest hour.
- Supervise "lights out" and check each unit for proper counselor supervision.
- See that counselors and campers are on time to activities and meals.
- Observe counselor/camper relationships and report periodically to the Head Unit Leader.
- Conduct periodic unit meetings.
- Coordinate camper planned outings with the Head Unit Leader.
- Assign cabins for dining hall/shower house kapers.
- Present Announcements after meals.
B. Supervise unit housing:
- Sanitation and clean up; work with Head Unit Leader.
- Care and supply of necessary cleaning and bathroom supplies.
- Inspection of units and surrounding grounds daily for cleanliness, neatness, and necessary repairs
C. Help the Head Unit Leader plan and supervise evening programs and intersession covering a wide variety of science,
recreational, and social activities of interest to teenagers:
- See that necessary equipment and supplies are available.
- Supervise staff assigned to the program.
- Supervise the set-up of the dining hall for evening programs and special events.
- See that evening programs and special events are successfully carried out.
- Evaluate programs with staff and administration.
- Instruct or assist with program activities as assigned.
- Act as a driver of our camp vans for program and general transportation.
- Perform any other duties necessary to the operation of Seacamp and the wellbeing of our campers, parents, and staff.
Requirements
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Must have worked at Seacamp at least one season as a counselor, having demonstrated initiative and leadership qualities, or demonstrate the equivalent in leadership or camp administrative experience.
- Experienced in supervising young people in group activities.
- During staff training, all program staff are required to participate and successfully complete American Red Cross (ARC) Waterfront Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and the NAUI Skin-diving course. In addition, SCUBA certified divers must also complete the NAUI SCUBA Rescue Diver course (summer only).
- Must successfully complete the Seacamp Captain's Workshop during pre-camp.
- Must be able to lead and actively participate in rigorous outdoor learning experiences.
- Must demonstrate a high level of enthusiasm and willingness to work in a leadership capacity.
- Should have experience in some phase of recreational program planning.
- Must be experienced in keeping accurate records and making reports.
