Job Description:
Facilities Management, ASU West Valley Campus, seeks a Grounds Supervisor to oversee grounds services activities.
Essential Duties:
Provide direction and oversight to Grounds Services personnel for all facets of landscape maintenance responsibilities in assigned areas.
Develop work schedules and issue daily task assignments based on situational priority, seasonality, and/or direction of Leadership.
Perform routine quality control inspections in assigned areas and delegate punch list items to responsible personnel for remediation.
Ensure proper irrigation scheduling, system performance, and maintenance in assigned areas.
Make recommendations for new landscape, hardscape, and irrigation improvements.
Oversee procurement of necessary tools, equipment, and materials for personnel and projects.
Recommend, implement, and enforce methods and procedures designed to increase overall effectiveness and efficiency in the Grounds Services operation, while accomplishing safety and sustainability goals and objectives.
Assist in compiling information for budgets, estimates and special projects.
Conduct appropriate horticulture and safety training (classroom, field, tailgate) to designated personnel, as needed.
Inspect and oversee both finished projects as well as work in progress to ensure proper and satisfactory horticultural methods, ASU standards, safety protocols, and adherence to work schedules.
Implement appropriate steps in ASU’s Integrated Pest Management program to control insects, pests or disease.
Respond to relevant hazards, emergencies and storm events, some of which may occur outside of normal work schedule.
Coordinate with outside contractors and vendors for repairs and services while providing quality control measures during ongoing projects.
Develop and track goals and objectives for subordinates.
Gather, compile, and enter data into departmental work order system.
Prepare administrative reports as assigned.
Communicate and coordinate with other Grounds supervisors and Leadership to complete tasks and projects campus wide, as needed.
Need to be available to direct activities as required for night and weekend campus events and emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Perform other duties as assigned.
DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday; 5:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
This position is based at ASU’s West Valley campus and may require working from other campuses depending on operational needs.
Salary Rate or Salary Range: $56,000 - $60,000 per year or commensurate of experience and education. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona
Desired Qualifications:
Six years of grounds maintenance work experience which includes two years of supervisory experience; OR, Associate’s degree in Horticulture or related field AND four years of grounds maintenance experience including two years of supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Technical training and/or professional certifications in landscape, horticulture, pest management, arboriculture and irrigation may be required for some incumbents and/or positions.
Experience in:
Managing teams of 8 or more people
Developing irrigation schedules based on ET and hydrozone conditions
Using Calsense controllers and web-based software
Using Hunter ICC2 and ACC2 controllers and Centralus software
Utilizing Google Earth for creating and updating hydrozone and component maps
Irrigation controller installation
Making field repairs to lines, valves, heads, etc.
Flow monitoring and management
Irrigation system design
Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor (CLIA)
Knowledge of:
Principles of horticulture
Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel)
Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills
Working Environment:
Activities require standing for varying lengths of time and walking distances outdoors to perform work which requires frequent bending, stooping, reaching, climbing ladders, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 lbs. and working outside in extreme temperatures and in dirty outdoor environment.
May be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed, including use of safety equipment.
Some activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
Drive/operate University cart/vehicle/equipment.

This position is based at ASU’s West Valley campus and may require working from other campuses depending on operational needs.
This position requires that you must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39-month period from date of hire.
Must pass pre-employment audiogram exam post offer of employment.
This position requires working a rotating on-call/stand-by schedule and may be called in for emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.
This position is considered safety/security sensitive and will include a fingerprint check. Employment is contingent upon successful passing of all background, including fingerprint checks.
Driving Requirement:
This position may require driving. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
