This position offers hands-on experience in the Agronomy and Maintenance department within the golf industry, providing an opportunity to develop skills in the maintenance and care of turfgrass, gaining hands-on experience in various aspects of turfgrass management and operations supervision.
Job Overview: Tobacco Road is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Agronomy Intern to join our team for the summer season. This position offers hands-on experience in the Agronomy and Maintenance department within the golf industry, providing an opportunity to develop skills in the maintenance and care of turfgrass, gaining hands-on experience in various aspects of turfgrass management and operations supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
Turfgrass Management:
Performing cultural practices such as aerification, verticutting, topdressing, and rolling to maintain turf health. This also includes the mowing of all playing surfaces (greens, tees, fairways, etc.).
Chemical & Fertilizer Application:
Assisting with the calibration, safe handling, and application of liquid and granular fertilizers and plant protectants (pesticides, fungicides, etc.)
Irrigation working alongside Irrigation techs, which involves hand watering, using soil moisture sensors (TDR meters), and troubleshooting irrigation systems.
Course Operations & Planning:
Participating in daily course preparation (e.g., setting up tees, cutting cups), record-keeping for maintenance activities and chemical inventory, and attending planning meetings Director of Agronomy.
Leadership & Projects:
Opportunities often exist to lead small crews on specific daily tasks or special in-house construction and renovation projects.
Qualifications, Education & Experience:
Must be pursuing or currently enrolled in a recent graduate of a 2-year or 4-year turfgrass management, agronomy, horticulture, or a related science program.
No prior experience necessary.
Licenses:
Valid driver's license
Physical Stamina:
The role requires physical work in varying weather conditions, including the ability to stand, walk, bend for extended periods, and lift items up to 50 pounds.
Essential Skills:
Basic knowledge and operational experience with turf equipment (mowers, trimmers, etc.).
Familiarity with irrigation systems, including troubleshooting and repair.
Understanding of fertilizer and chemical application techniques, safety, and calibration.
