We are seeking dedicated crew members to join our research team on the front lines of endangered species management. We are hiring (2) - MFBRP Mosquito Research/Control Field Technician I- ID# 226449

These are regular, full-Time (40 hrs/wk), limited-term (not to exceed two (2) years in duration from date of hire), mostly field-based positions with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project (MFBRP), on the Island of Maui, Hawai‘i. 

MONTLY SALARY/BENEFITS: $4,071/Month, healthcare (medical & dental), paid vacation, sick leave, and 13 holidays. Temporary housing can be available. 

DUTIES: Conducts field work, research, and conservation management projects for the recovery of Maui's endangered bird species. Captures and surveys for mosquitos for avian disease studies in native, restored, and non-native forest habitats. Participates in deployment of landscape level mosquito control. Most work will be performed in remote areas and will require the ability to hike long distances. Employee will be expected to camp in remote areas for up to 8 days at a time on a regular basis and work irregular hours as needed. Provides direction, instruction, and guidance for four (4) associates, volunteers, or interns. Conducts all operations according to accepted safety standards and established protocols. Frequently work in and around helicopters, leads helicopter operations and serves as a helicopter manager. Drives project vehicles, both on and off road. Maintains and organizes repair of field equipment, trails, and field stations. Completes preparations and assists with logistics for field operations. Enters field and Geographic Information System (GIS) data into computer files for information summary and reporting. Writes trip summaries from field work completed. Helps maintain and manage electronic records of program operations. Helps maintain databases. Participates in conscientious adherence to all safety and research protocols, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Assists with public outreach and education activities. Helps to develop and present mate rials for outreach and environmental education.

Requirements

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
This position has a number of steps Level (I), (II), (III). Progression from one (1) level to the next is not dependent on time-in-grade, rather upon employee’s demonstrated abilities, competence, and operational needs. Hires will start at Level I.

EDUCATION: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college.

EXPERIENCE: Three to five (3-5) years of experience in biological fieldwork, including experience entering data and working in remote areas. (Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in sciences, natural resources, environmental studies, or related field may substitute for two (2) years of experience.).

ABILITIES & SKILLS:

• • Ability to take detailed field notes and follow a prescribed data collection system, and perform data entry into spreadsheets and databases. Basic mechanical and electrical skills for maintaining project equipment, field camps, and vehicles.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency with Microsoft programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to navigate in remote areas with and without a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.
  • Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission in off-road conditions.
  • Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR or Wilderness First Aid (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within six (6) months and external sling load (A219) course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete all helicopter manager courses within twelve (12) months from date of hire.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS:

• • Ability to conduct fieldwork in high elevation forest (up to 6,500 feet) under cold, wet, and extremely rugged field conditions.
  • Ability to hike on poor footing conditions for ten to fifteen (10-15) miles, carrying loads up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.
  • Ability to live and work in remote field camps under primitive conditions in close quarters with other individuals for up to eight (8) consecutive days.
  • Ability to work around and fly in approved helicopters.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong interest and background in conservation. Experience sampling, identifying, and storing mosquitoes and other invertebrates. Experience mistnetting, banding, and taking blood samples from songbirds. Interagency Aviation Training. Experience with small machine maintenance and electronics repair.
