The Permanente Medical Group, Inc. (TPMG – Kaiser Permanente Northern California) is one of the largest medical groups in the nation with over 10,000 physicians, 21 medical centers, numerous clinics throughout Northern and Central California, and an over 80-year tradition of providing quality medical care. We are currently seeking 1-2 highly motivated physicians to join our Junior Faculty Fellowship in Medical Education and Healthcare Simulation program in California’s Central Valley.

TPMG Junior Faculty Fellow – Medical Education & Healthcare Simulation with Focus in Global Health

Opening in Modesto/Manteca, California

This unique 12-month faculty development opportunity is designed for physicians who have completed an ACGME-accredited residency program in Emergency Medicine and are interested in developing advanced expertise in medical education, healthcare simulation, faculty development and educational scholarship. The Junior Faculty Fellow will join the Kaiser Permanente Central Valley Emergency Medicine Residency Program and work alongside experienced clinician-educators, simulation faculty, residency leadership, and regional educational leaders within Kaiser Permanente Northern California. The position combines active clinical practice and bedside teaching with protected academic time dedicated to developing the skills necessary for a career as a clinician-educator and leader in healthcare simulation and medical education.

Position Structure

The fellow will be employed full-time and split time between:

Clinical Emergency Medicine

•        The Junior Faculty Fellow will practice clinically within the Kaiser Permanente Central Valley Emergency Departments, primarily at KP Modesto and KP Manteca.
•        Providing high-quality emergency medical care within TPMG’s integrated healthcare delivery system.
•        Supervising and teaching Emergency Medicine residents and medical students during clinical shifts.
•        Providing bedside instruction, feedback, coaching, and assessment of trainees.
•        Participating as junior faculty within the academic mission of the Central Valley Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

Medical Education and Healthcare Simulation

•        Protected academic time will provide structured professional development and hands-on experience in medical education and healthcare simulation. The fellow will work closely with faculty mentors to develop an individualized professional development plan based upon career goals and areas of interest.
•        Medical Education & Residency Leadership: The Junior Faculty Fellow will participate actively in the educational mission of the Central Valley Emergency Medicine Residency Program.
•        Healthcare Simulation: The fellow will develop practical expertise in simulation-based education and curriculum development.
•        Teaching & Faculty Development: The fellow will develop a regional and national educator portfolio through progressive teaching responsibilities.
•        Professional Development: The fellow will receive dedicated mentorship and structured professional development throughout the 12-month program.
•        Scholarship: Development as an educational scholar is a central component of the fellowship.

During the fellowship year, the Junior Faculty Fellow will participate in at least one scholarly activity or research project related to medical education, healthcare simulation, global health education, patient safety, or another approved area.

Candidates must:

•        Hold an MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
•        Have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited residency program.
•        Be board eligible or board certified in their primary clinical specialty, as applicable.
•        Be eligible for an unrestricted California medical license.
•        Demonstrate a strong interest in medical education, healthcare simulation, and development as a clinician-educator.
•        Demonstrate commitment to teaching residents and medical students.
•        Possess strong communication, collaboration, and professional skills.

Preferred

Competitive applicants will demonstrate one or more of the following:

•        Previous experience teaching medical students or residents.
•        Experience participating in simulation-based education.
•        Prior involvement in medical education research or scholarship.
•        Interest or experience in global health education.
•        Previous curriculum-development experience.
•        Evidence of leadership within residency, medical school, or professional organizations.
•        Interest in pursuing a long-term career within academic medicine and TPMG.
